Snakes in the Outback

Snakes are one of the most feared animals in the world.  Australia is home to over 140 species of snake, 100 of which are venomous, but on 12 species are known to be lethal to humans. Snakes will only attack if they feel threatened, the best way to stay safe around areas that where snakes habitat, that is long grass, waterways, bushes, etc, is to make noise, as they will sense the vibrations on the ground and in the air and slither away.

If you are bitten, try to take note of what the snake looks like, wrap the limb in bandage or a ripped t-shirt and find a hospital as soon as possible.

Use the following guide to identify the snake:

One of the most venomous snakes is the Red-Bellied Black Snake which mainly live on the eastern side of Australia around water sources. It is distinctively black along its back and has a red belly, hence the name. It can grow to be 1.5 metres long, and if bitten get to a hospital quickly.

Also found along water sources are Tiger Snakes, and like the name suggests it can have has lighter stripes across its back. Growing to 1.5 metres long and it is mainly found in the eastern and southern areas of Australia.

One snake that is lethal to humans is the Brown Snake and can reach up to 2.3 metres long. It's venom is extremely poisonous and you should seek medical treatment immediately. The King Brown snake larger, then the Brown Snake, reaching 3 metres long and as thick as a mans arm. It mainly lives in Northern areas of Australia.

Another venomous snake of the Australian outback is the Taipan.  It will change its colour with the seasons, from a rich red to brownish green. With a length of up to 3.5 metres long it is found in central Australia. It is shy and prefers to hide away rather than attack.  The Death Adder is also very venomous, but it is not as common as the snakes listed above.

When you see a snake in the outback, just stand still, don't make loud noises and wait for the snake to pass. Use your common sense, and don't go out alone.  Remember that snakes are just as scared of you as you are of them.
